events. The 9/11 attacks had just

happened. And after returning to
work from maternity leave, she en-

dured multiple months with a lot
of calls for homicides and other

tragedies. “I felt like I was the
Grim Reaper.”
Ԑආʾሒʘdࡈɛேᜓь
She was starting to become cyni-
ədμႭfҢᔊٜʔ
cal when her commander sugested
she join Rotary. She eventually be-
ڦdவࡈ˰ޢɪϞவჿεߕλ
came president-elect of the Rotary
Club of Ancaster A.M. in Ontario
ٙԫઋ͍ί೯͛f
and was sent to the Rotary Inter-
national Convention in England. “I
ٵʊίဏϷဧ
walked into the House of Friend-

ship and was gobsmacked,” she
says. “I could not believe the good

that was going on in the world.”
Serkeyn has served for 28 years
ሜࡰfεϋԸdμءจՑ̰ᔳ
at the Hamilton Police Service. She
ɛɹࣩၾɛɹனርʘගπί
works as the DNA coordinator in the
forensics unit. Over the years, she’s
ᗫᑌfίɓϣҧቃ୦ึݺਗ
noted connection between missing
persons cases and human tra ck-
ʕdμٝ༸ҧቃϞ၇ҧቃБ
ing . At a Rotary institute event, she
learned about Rotary Action Groups
ਗྠdԨ̋ɝəɓࡈߧɢ
and got involved with one devoted
μଉʲᗫᕿٙྠjഐ̱
to a cause close to her heart: end-
ing slavery and human tra cking.
ҘၾɛɹனርfҧቃБਗ
“Rotary Action Groups rejuvenate
people,” she says. “They make peo-
ྠᜫɛࡁࠠᐏݺɢdμ
ple passionate about Rotary.”
In July, Serkeyn will become the

governor of District 7090, which en-

compasses 75 Rotary and Rotaract
clubs throughout southern Ontario
